Custom Expanding Files
Compartmented files that separate document groups within one enclosure.

Specifications
Describe the contents per section and the maximum intended file thickness.
| Sorting | Pocket count, tab order, label language and document orientation. |
|---|---|
| Load | Total thickness and the heaviest compartment. |
| Construction | Accordion material, joints, base reinforcement and closure travel. |
| Compartments | Number, index arrangement and intended loading agreed in advance. |
| Body | Panel and expanding-side construction matched to the required capacity. |
| Closure | Closure and carrying requirements recorded in the specification. |
Reference formats describe the contents, not a guaranteed manufacturing range. Finished dimensions, material grades and tolerances are agreed against your drawing and sample.
Compartment Capacity
An expanding file connects several pockets with an accordion structure. Compartment count describes sorting positions, not capacity per section. Specify total stack thickness and realistic distribution. One heavily filled pocket loads the partitions differently from an evenly packed file. Include bound or unusually rigid inserts in that loading plan.

Tabs and Closures
Tabs must stay visible when the file opens, including at the rear. Identify preprinted, replaceable or blank labels. Handles, elastic or flap closures need adequate reach at the agreed maximum expansion. For an upright file, evaluate stability with actual content distribution rather than an empty sample.

Accordion Joints
Repeated folds, partition attachments and the base deserve close inspection. Open fully, load documents and check corner clearance at the bottom. Close and carry the file as intended. Record reinforcement and load assumptions in the construction bill, especially for portable organizers. Check that outer packing does not crush the accordion before use.

Manufacturing & Assembly
Artwork and cutting layouts define the panels, pockets and folds. Printed or converted components are assembled and checked for document fit before packing.
Compartment sequence, expansion movement, seam security and closure under the agreed load.

Packaging & Protection
Bring the expanding body into its normal closed position without crushing the gussets. Protect the closure and maintain the agreed tab sequence.
Record the unit pack, pack quantity, carton dimensions and label positions. Check a packed sample with the intended contents before approving the shipment arrangement.

What to Check
Compartment sequence, expansion movement, seam security and closure under the agreed load.
Office records, school subjects and portable document organization.
Record the reference contents, inspection method and acceptance criteria with the approved sample.
Buyer Question
Can total capacity simply be divided by pocket count?
Only if that represents the intended use. Send a loading plan identifying sections with thicker or bound documents.
