The selected route is recorded against the approved product construction.
Printing is selected against the substrate and finished geometry. Paper wrap, board, PP and textile do not respond identically to the same artwork. Give the required visible result, colour references and actual material grade. Separate full-colour graphics from spot-colour logos, and identify which faces remain visible after folding or sewing. That distinction affects the proof and production route.

A controlled artwork package includes the dieline, panel orientation, print area, colour definitions and revision identifier. Keep dimensions on a separate technical layer and mark areas affected by folds, welds or hardware. Fonts and linked graphics need a reproducible handover. Bleed and safe-area values should follow the approved production template rather than a generic value applied to every substrate.

A digital proof checks content and placement but may not reproduce the final surface colour or finish. A decorated material sample helps assess appearance; a converted sample shows how registration behaves after assembly. Agree the colour reference and viewing conditions. Inspect small text, solid areas, edge registration and any barcode separately because each reveals different defects.
For a factory review, request the planned printing method and an explanation of artwork control, setup approval and in-run checks. Confirm which decoration steps occur at the site and which are contracted out. Ask how rejected print is kept out of assembly and how a revised artwork file replaces the previous version. A quoted print method alone does not establish colour consistency across different products.
Artwork files, print colours, Pantone references where required, material and finished dimensions.
Send a drawing or reference sample alongside quantity and delivery requirements. Material compatibility, applicable finishes and any subcontracted operations are confirmed during quotation.
Registration, colour against the approved reference, print position and surface condition.
Agree the reference sample and relevant acceptance points before the production run. The finished article is also checked for fit and function after downstream assembly.
